Types of ligands

 1. Monodentate ligand:

A monodentate ligand is the one where a single donar atom shares an electron pair to form a coordinate bond with the central metal ion.

2. Polydentate ligands:

A polydentate ligand has two or more donar atoms linked to central metal ion.

3. Ambidentate ligand:

The ligands which have two donar atoms and use the electron pair of either donar atoms to form a coordination bond with the metal ion, are called ambidentate ligand.
